2012 has already seen NDV take first prize in both the Culwick and McAuliffe Silver Cups at Feis Ceoil, present joint concerts with international guest choirs from the Philippines and France, and make studio recordings with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. In July the choir joins the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra for a performance of The Planets by Holst, and gives a series of concerts in the south of France as one of two guest choirs invited to the acclaimed festival Musique en Morvan.

Meanwhile, in June, despite the busy calendar, there's always time for what NDV enjoys most of all: giving rich, wide-ranging and memorable concerts. As always, NDV has come up with a programme designed to reward the seasoned listener but also, and more especially, to appeal to people who wouldn't normally choose to go to choral concerts.

This time the choir will sample composers (Monteverdi, Morley, Victoria) from the Renaissance "golden age" of fabulous choral music, present exciting pieces by Irish composers working right now (Rhona Clarke, Eibhlis Farrell, Kevin O'Connell), and reprise a selection of the breathtaking contrasts experienced last November by alternating movements from masses by Palestrina (b. 1525) and Giles Swayne (b. 1946!).

All that plus three world premieres and a few little surprises, some of them in honour of the season: "Summertime, and the living…."

Without losing sight of its roots, the choir now developed a new aesthetic featuring more contemporary music and incorporating new elements such as dance and lighting.

Since its foundation the choir has maintained strong links with charities and good causes, notably with UNICEF and Amnesty International, and with organisations supporting research into multiple sclerosis or opposing torture.

For their Dublin concert, La Sestina will perform a wide range of music spanning from Lassus and Gesualdo in the Renaissance to Eric Whitacre, Urmas Sisask and, of course, their own conductor Stephan Nicolay in the present day.

La Sestina have invited Ireland's award-winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices to share this special concert. The two ensembles will perform a number of pieces together, in addition to which New Dublin Voices and its conductor Bernie Sherlock will perform the beautiful Requiem by Maurice Duruflé. Playing the virtuoso organ part is David Leigh, with mezzo-soprano soloist Fionnuala de Frein and recent multiple prize-winner at Feis Ceoil 2012 Padraic Rowan.

La Sestina with New Dublin Voices
Unitarian Church
St Stephen's Green, Dublin
8pm, Saturday April 28th
Tickets €10 / €5 at the door
Or book online: http://entertainment.ticketsolve.com/shows/126524632/events/126696647

New Dublin Voices: Home for Christmas

Fresh from sweeping all six available prizes at Flanders-Maasmechelen, Belgium's elite international choral competition, New Dublin Voices now brings all its energy and colour to the music of Christmas.

Also winners of last year's Lyric fm Choirs for Christmas competition, New Dublin Voices and its conductor Bernie Sherlock honour the spirit and tradition of Christmas with a beautiful selection of carols and songs – lively and quick, or deep and contemplative, very ancient and very new, old favourites, new sounds. There will be the world premieres of new carols by Irish composers Stephen Gardner and Jonathan Nangle, and the centerpiece is Benjamin Britten's moving and sublime A Ceremony of Carols.

New Dublin Voices is home for Christmas, performing in three different Dublin venues beginning December 9th in the National Concert Hall's John Field Room, and continuing on December 14th in Christ Church Cathedral. Music will be interspersed with seasonal readings, and the Saturday Family Matinée – the earlier of two concerts in Draíocht on December 17th – will feature a few surprises for kids (of all ages!).

New Dublin Voices, a non-professional chamber choir under the direction of conductor Bernie Sherlock, was competing in the biennial International Choir Contest of Flanders-Maasmechelen where it not only won first prize but also swept all other available prizes: best performance of the specially commissioned set work, best folksong, best performance of a contemporary piece (O frondens virga by the Irish composer Ben Hanlon), the Audience Prize, and Choir of the Festival.

11 choirs in all – from Germany, Russia, Latvia, Hungary, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain, as well as Ireland – were selected to take part in the competition which was judged by an international panel of 5 adjudicators. Performances were spread over the two days and the results were announced late on Sunday night. New Dublin Voices, which receives no sponsorship or government funding, amassed close to €4000 in prize money.

"I'm delighted we hit our top form this weekend and did so well," said conductor Bernie Sherlock. "Apart from anything else, New Dublin Voices needs the money! This means we can start planning to travel somewhere else next year."
